Remember meals of yesterday?
Remember those days when Grandmother prepares a meal for her whole family. I remember those days very well. My late Grandmother had a stove that uses wood for heat. It was very difficult to cook on, but the job got done. The meal would seem to take forever, but the baking was done all day and the meal started early. She died when I was young at age 90, but she lived a long life.
She was born during the time before vehicles, late 1800's, and her children were born during the 1920's, growing up during the Great Depression and WWII where most of them enlisted. They had six children all boys. Large families were the thing back then. They grew up on the farm outside of the Town of Marshfield, WI. At that time frame, Marshfield was a small town just starting to regrow after the Great Fire of 1887.
During the Great Depression, the meals were solely of cooked cabbage and potato soup. There was also the prohibition during that time frame, and the beer stills were in the basement of the homes brewing beer for family socials. Families will get together and the parents play cards while the kids play games. At that time, the rule was, the children were to be seen not heard.
The children's chores were farm chores of tending to the cows, chickens, and the field. The Mother's work was the kitchen and the cleaning. The meals were made 3 times a day: breakfast, dinner, and supper. The supper was the largest meal of the day. The children were also to go to school. They walked to school instead of riding vehicles. Parochial schools were very big back then and they were run by the Nuns and the Priest. One room had more than one grade level being taught at that time. Once their school day has ended, the children return home and they work on their chores.
During the Depression, the children had a choice to make, either go to school or do farm chores. Some went onto high school with little money the family can afford at the time, and some stayed home and worked. The highest level of education on some was 6th grade. My Dad was one of them.
The meals during that time was all home made cooking, no instant, no tv dinners, nothing microwave and electric heat. The stove was heated by wood and it is very large, two times the size of a standard stove of today. There is a slot where the wood goes in and lit up. The pots, pans, and kettles goes on top of the stove, which had to be watched carefully. The stove leaves a smoke, so the stove had to connected to a chimney. The stove was also the main source of heat for the whole house. The plumbing was different. There was a building structure called an out house for the bathroom, and the washroom was inside the house with running water for cleaning. There were 4 main rooms inside that house, the parlor for calling, the living room, the kitchen, and the dining room. The largest room in the house is the dining room with a huge mahogany dining table. When I ate at that table, I never went hungry. Grandmother will make huge meals and all from scratch. The smell from the kitchen was so wonderful. The meat was from the cows on the farm, the chicken from the hen house, potatoes from the field, vegetables from the garden. The dessert from Grandma's own baking from scratch. Nothing was instant at her house. Then after the meals, everyone will sit on the porch and us, kids, will listen to stories of yesteryear. During the holidays, she will cover that dining room table from one end to the other with home made candy she makes for all the grandchildren. From a variety of cookies, candies of all kinds made from perfection sugar and egg whites, and lots of gingerbread.
She is gone now, since back in the late 70's. I will never forget her cooking and seeing the meals she makes. Now days, everything is so simple. Very little things are made from scratch. Every so often, when I have a lot of time on my hands, I will bake from scratch and through that, I remember my grandmother's cooking.
